Unfortunately, taking your family on the road to go to conventions may not always be the best idea…..
Somehow Elijah ended up with an uncomfortable illness that had "blessed" us with the challenging opportunity to administer liquid medicine to him for about a week now. So we are on day 7, and he still has 4 more days. Up until this morning we had been basically man handling my poor child. Dwayne with arms and legs, me with head squeezed to my bosom. I basically was doing to my child what I would not do to any of my patients…yes quite the opposite of what I preach in the work environment.
NOT to do list
-Child positioned in the supine position/less than a 90 degree angle…….check
-Child restrained by 2 people requiring total assistance……check
-Forced medication administration……check
-Dumping 10 ml of medicine into child’s mouth eliciting a gag reflex……..check
-and of course….crossing my fingers that I am not promoting a tinge of
aspiration…..check
I’m a Speech Pathologist, I’m sure you saw that coming!
After all that from last night’s events, we tried to go a different route this morning. I poured about 5 ml onto his grilled cheese bkfst and the other into his fairly large bottle of grape juice. I thought grape juice had such a strong taste to it that he wouldn’t notice. I mean it was only 5 ml and bubble gum/grapeish flavored at that!
Yeah, 5 ml went down somewhat unnoticeable with the grilled cheese. But Oh my child!!!! He picks up the grape juice….takes a small sip….smacks his lips and his taste buds about 10 times and says, "This medicinejuice…this medicinejuice….don’t want it."
We were all at the table, holding in our laughter, thinking, "Why is this kid smarter than a 5th grader?"
